Accessibility

Mozilla believes that the Internet truly is for everyone, and that those with disabilities should be able to participate on the Web along with their sighted and hearing peers. Mozilla strives to make the Internet accessible to everyone without regard to their native language, economic situation, or level of education. The same principle should apply to those who have temporary or permanent disabilities. As part of our accessibility strategy, we are funding the development of free, open source options for those with visual and auditory impairments.

Free and open source software is particularly important to the concept of universal accessibility. Development of user-friendly screen readers and subtitling technology will allow those with blindness or deafness to experience the richness of the Web without needless extra cost or difficulty compared to sighted and hearing users. Beyond software development, it is important to raise awareness about the existence of these tools, providing choice for those who need it most. While many accessibility features are built into Mozilla's products by its employees, much of the technology is created by expert developers outside Mozilla who focus exclusively on this area of need.
