Mozilla issued a grant to Phillip Schmidt in 2009 (P2PU) to enable the creation of an online course called Open|Web|Content|Education, where educators learned about open content licensing, open web technologies and open teaching methods. In 2011, Mozilla provided a grant to P2PU to support Webmaking 101 and the School of Webcraft community coordination.

P2PU combines open educational resources, structured courses, and recognition of knowledge and learning to offer high-quality low-cost education opportunities. It is run and governed by volunteers.
