Stuck using IE6 At Work?

Stuck

You're not alone. According to a 2009 Forrester Research study, 60 percent of companies are using IE6 as their default browser at work, as their IT departments are reluctant to upgrade and support a current browser. If you're in this situation, we've put together a letter you can pass on to your IT department. Just copy and paste it into an e-mail and customize it as you see fit. Get your colleagues to send a letter too.

Dear IT department,

I am writing you today to implore you to upgrade our organization's web browsers from Internet Explorer 6 to a modern browser. Internet Explorer 6 is one of the most actively exploited pieces of software around. It's old, unstable, dangerous and slow. This browser puts our organization at risk for attacks, as a majority of spyware and adware makes its way onto computers through its security holes.

As you know, recovering a computer from an attack takes a huge amount of time and work, sometimes resulting in having to completely wipe the system and start from scratch. What's more, we don't have to be putting our computers and our productivity at risk. Practically all of the standards that Internet Explorer supports are met and exceeded by current browsers, which will translate into serious productivity gains for the company. Giving us access to tabbed browsing, faster processing, and modern JavaScript engines will make it easier to get work done and keep the company computers safe from security risks.

I know that upgrading software at the enterprise level is not a trivial task. But I hope that this note will help you to set the software priorities for the organization and help you make the case for access to browsers that can help everyone work better and safer.

Sincerely,
